This is a great start for those who want to move to DSLR from your regular point-and-shoot cameras, like Coolpix.

This doesn’t have overwhelming bells and whistles like the other 4-number series or the 2-number series. This gets you used to the basics of DSLR’s Graduating from this will make it SO much easier when you get the camera you really want. It’s great for someone who is just starting out or doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on equipment because the quality is great and it’s not too expensive. With this camera, I can finally capture those special moments.

I’ve been a Nikon guy for years and I recently purchased this camera for my girlfriend. I have a pretty extensive and expensive kit but I typically find myself using the D and it’s plastic kit lens instead. It’s incredibly lightweight and portable for a DSLR. In good light, the D produces sharp, colorful images that are practically indiscernible to my D Anyone that « needs » more features needs to work on their photo skillsnot inventory.

You take a picture and it takes several seconds for it to show you a preview on the back. Still miles beyond point and shoots, but it’s nothing compared to the D This means that you can’t use any older lenses without needing to focus manually. Basically, only buy the newer AF-S lenses. It won’t make you a better photographer but it will give you beautiful, accurately colored, sharp and high resolution photographs in good light.

Despite my ISO « con, » it really does perform nicely in low light. Just don’t rely on cranking ISO up I highly recommend this. Still no internal focusing motor, but it gives you a better screen, video capabilities, and the same image sensor that’s in the D People always notice shallow depths of field, like it, don’t know how to explain it, and say « you have a great camera.

Both brands are quite comparable, so at this level of the market it is really a matter of personal preference as to which brand you choose – and the current deals and discounts on offer. I choose the Nikon D camera with the kit mm lens over the Canon model because I got a large discount off the second lens I wanted – the mm. I see now that Amazon sells the camera with this lens in addition to the mm as an option, but this wasn’t an option back when I bought then. I thought with these two lenses I would have an adequate kit to get started in DSLR photography, although either a 35mm or 50mm prime FX lens is next on my wishlist.

FX lenses work fine on a DX body such as the D, although with a 1. I bought my camera and lenses back in April and decided to use it for several months before I reviewed them. I was heading on a trip a month later that I wanted this camera to accompany me on, and also wanted time to get to grips with the step up from many years of just using point and shoots before I offered a public opinion.

I had wanted a DSLR for years, but couldn’t justify the cost to myself, I have kids and feel guilty spending money on myself , and so I had already read several books that explained the science of taking photos in a fully manual mode with a DSLR but I had never so much as picked up a DSLR before buying one. From using both film camera and digital point and shoots I was already fairly experienced and proficient in the composition aspect of taking a photo as well as in using image processing software such as Lightroom, Photoshop Elements and Paint Shop Pro to improve my photos.

I then jumped in my car and headed off on a drive to somewhere fairly scenic but local ish to test out my new purchase.

My several hours that day out taking photos was a very educational and fun time for me, and certainly cemented my enthusiasm to learn more about photography that I had hoped I would have when taking the jump up to a DSLR.

I toyed around taking photos of things with differing apertures in Aperture Priority mode until I was comfortable controlling the depth of field, as best I could with the kit lens. Back home that evening I went out in the back yard and mounted my new camera on an old tripod I have with the mm lens and took photos of the moon and my house in the dark until I better understood shutter speed settings and how different ISO settings affect the photos I take.

Again, this was all stuff I’d read about, but never really fully had practical experience with regard to my own photographs before. My kids were also willing models so I could experiment with portraiture. Over the next few weeks before the family trip I planned to take this DSLR on with me, I picked the camera up and experimented daily.

I took better photos every day and started to instinctively know what settings to use in full manual mode – my first guesses became increasingly correct, or were otherwise a pretty good starting point to fine tune when I had set the camera incorrectly for the conditions or photo I wanted.

This is a tremendous camera to learn with and takes fabulous photos. My family went on the trip overseas. I took close to photos in the weeks we were traveling. Granted, I used the camera in a continuous shooting mode almost exclusively — taking several photos of the same scene to try to guarantee a good shot – especially when photographing movement or people, so the total figure was bumped up somewhat.

If I’m taking photos left, right and center, I do now cheat a little and use Aperture Priority mode quite a lot so I just control the depth of field and let the camera do most of the rest, although I retain control of the ISO as the camera seems to do a poor job in auto mode sometimes. If I am planning a photo that I want to be proud of, I will still switch to full manual mode for the satisfaction that I am « making » a photo rather than just « taking » a photo.

Oftentimes though, when out and about, one of the semi-manual modes Shutter Priority or Aperture Priority modes are all that is required to get the shot wanted and are a time-saver to use.

Okay, I admit it – I sometimes use Auto-mode now too I hope others decide to take the plunge from a point-and-shoot camera to a DSLR and ignite a similar passion for photography. I’m very happy with my purchase. I’m a fairly new photographer hobbyist but hoping to get more serious about it and wanted to upgrade from the little D I learned on.

I’m very happy about going with this model. It’s definitely a step up, but if you know what you’re doing, it takes no time at all to get used to the D It feels very sturdy and well made.

It’s just a bit bigger than my old D but I doubt anyone will see that as a problem. It’s compatible with my handful of lenses, which was definitely another determining factor. Overall, I think it’s a great option if you’re getting to that middle ground between « what’s a camera? Highly recommended!

If you look carefully through the DSLR offer from all major brands, there are very few things that might make you buy a different one than the D You might say it’s a subjective point of view, but since I’ve been shooting film too with the great F5 and has my share of digital compact experience Lumix LX3K , I’ve been wanting to upgrade to a different, presumably better DSLR only a few months after I bought this one, thinking that it was obsolete.

It has now been over a year, within which new, amazing DSLRs have been launched. Of course, if a few hundred buck is no problem, get the D, or if DX is not good enough for you, by all means get the Canon 6D, the best, cheapest full frame to date. But that’s just me :.

Just like a lot of others, I too got a camera with the notorious back focus ‘problem’! But I was not worried because, before deciding on D I did a search and found that back focus or front focus issue is not a specific D or Nikon issue. Canon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus They use different terminology though.. So, fine tuning looked like something that is not uncommon with pro-prosumer type camera bodies. Because this also could be viewed as having ‘more control’ over our gear, at some point.

I did not face any back focus issue with my D or my Canon T2i , so, there indeed was a moment of frustration when I got a camera that looks somewhere else when I ask it to ‘look there’.

Personally, I find this as a pain than a problem because I had to fine tune two of my lenses a 35mm 1. So, should one stay away from D because of this terrible back focus ‘problem’? D might back focus when paired with some lenses but at the same time, the camera comes with a built-in feature to address this concern. If that fails to resolve the issue, then, ONLY then, it becomes a problem.

The quality of the camera is excellent and the instructions are clear, as long as you take them step-by-step, not that I ever do that. I bought this camera and a photo printer and some other electronics all at the same time and was overwhelmed with user manuals, instructions, etc. That’s because my personality demands that I do too much at once. Just take it one step at a time and I think you’ll love this camera, even if you are an electronic klutz like me.
