The Martian: Andy Weir Explains What He Got Right and Wrong – IEEE Spectrum.

I purchased this for my son’s family. Both boys, ages 7 and 9, enjoy the book. Their mother is reading it aloud to them. Children who are into Space stories that have realism, adventure and challenges for the main characters, will enjoy this Young Readers Edition. Didn’t realise it was the young readers version until it arrived. Bought the regular version too, read it aloud with my older boys.

After reading the first 6 books of the Drizzt legend, I wanted to get another three or four books in one It’s glossy and has a mirror-like effect. I also loved the « celebrating twenty years of Drizzt » emblem on the lower left corner.
The pages feel That’s odd to say, but I’ve never felt such soft pages. I stumbled upon the first book about the infamous Drow by accident, now I can’t stop reading! How Lord of the Rings ever got a movie before these works of art is beyond me! I mean come on, a badass elf with twin scimitars? No contest to me.

Because quartz has piezoelectric properties, changes in forces acting upon it cause changes in electric charge. These changes could be converted into measurements of angular velocity.
But with the fall of the Soviet Union and ensuing rapid contraction of the U. Or we find somewhere else we can use it. The hunt was on. Madni says he and members of his research and marketing teams went to every sensors conference they could find, talking to anyone who used inertial sensors, regardless of whether the applications were industrial, commercial, or space.
They showed the quartz angular-rate sensors the company had developed, touting their price, precision, and reliability, and laid out a path in which the devices became smaller and cheaper in just a few years. NASA was interested—and eventually used the devices in the Mars Pathfinder Sojourner rover and the systems that allowed astronauts to move about in space untethered.
Boeing and other aircraft and avionics-system manufacturers began adopting the devices. But the automotive industry clearly represented the biggest potential market. In the late s, car companies had begun introducing basic traction-control systems in their high-end vehicles. These systems monitored steering-wheel position, throttle position, and individual wheel speeds, and could adjust engine speed and braking when they detected a problem, such as one wheel turning faster than another.
This quartz tuning fork responds to inertial forces and forms the heart of the GyroChip. The industry was aware this was a deficiency, and that rollover accidents were a significant cause of deaths from auto accidents. Automotive-electronics suppliers like Bosch were working to develop small, reliable angular-rate sensors, mostly out of silicon, to improve traction control and rollover prevention, but none were ready for prime time.
Madni thought this was a market BEI could win. In partnership with Continental Teves of Frankfurt, Germany, BEI set out to reduce the size and cost of the quartz devices and manufacture them in quantities unheard of in the defense industry, planning to ramp up to millions annually. This major pivot—from defense to one of the most competitive mass-market industries—would require big changes for the company and for its engineers.
Madni took the leap. We are going to have to sell it in hundreds of thousands of units a month and then a million and more a month. And that the manufacturing, supply chain, and even sales management had to be changed dramatically. But he still lost some high-level design engineers. Others were willing to adapt, and he sent some of those engineers to visit watch manufacturers in Switzerland to learn about handling quartz; the watch industry had been using the material for decades.
And he offered others training by experts in the automotive industry, to learn about its operations and requirements. The changes needed were not easy, Madni remembers. We went through a hell of a process. In the late s, Madni says, the market for electronic stability-control systems exploded, as a result of an incident in Item Weight:. Number of Pages:. And the total solar energy hitting the surface is enough for their needs. And that one might have to be pretty big. Just think of how much food you eat in a year and imagine how much space it takes to grow it. Not to mention the other life support systems, most notably your oxygenator. A biosphere is far too risky on this scale. Why go out of your way to risk your life? Do you want to study the planet itself? Start your own civilization?
Exploit local resources for profit? Make a base with a big death ray so you can address the UN while wearing an ominous mask and demand ransom? Whatever your goal is, you better have it pretty well defined, and you better really mean it. Whatever your reason is, it better be worth it.
ANDY WEIR built a two-decade career as a software engineer until the success of his first published novel, The Martian, allowed him to live out his dream of writing full-time.
He is a lifelong space nerd and a devoted hobbyist of such subjects as relativistic physics, orbital mechanics, and the history of manned spaceflight. He also mixes a mean cocktail. This is Apollo 13 times ten. Clear your schedule before you crack the seal. This story will take your breath away faster than a hull breech. Smart, funny, and white-knuckle intense, The Martian is everything you want from a novel. Weir has crafted a relentlessly entertaining and inventive survival thriller, a MacGyver-trapped-on-Mars tale that feels just as real and harrowing as the true story of Apollo A great read with an inspiring attention to technical detail and surprising emotional depth.
Loved it! You can’t shake the feeling that this could all really happen. It’s Robinson Crusoe on Mars, 21st century style.
Set aside a chunk of free time when you start this one. You’re going to need it because you won’t want to put it down. The result is a story that is as plausible as it is compelling. I loved the visuals of the Martian landscape.
The original movie score was lovely; both the visuals and the score capturing the sense of immense, spectacular Martian vistas and the isolation of one tiny human being, alone on an entire planet. After seeing both the theatre and extended versions, I favor the extended version. It’s only about 10 additional minutes, but in those minutes, it captures character moments that enrich the story.
Absolutely recommended. No, I haven’t read the book and don’t intend to. It seems that some reviewers seem to think this all really happened.
No, it’s fiction. It didn’t and hasn’t happened and certainly won’t in my lifetime. But, I really enjoyed this movie. I’ve viewed it several times, just as I have « Hidden Figures, » which was also heavily fictionalized. Good entertainment! I’ve been to Monument Valley a couple of times and, believe me, there is no resemblance whatsoever. The « Mars-scape » is actually in the southern part of Jordan, near Petra. At least some part of « Lawrence of Arabia » was also filmed there.
The entertainment value is there, at least as far as I’m concerned. I want to take issue with the one reviewer who decided to politicize the « cooperation » from the Chinese. That is totally unnecessary. The actual story takes place years from now. No one can predict what may happen in the future. Is it unlikely, perhaps. I don’t know and neither does that reviewer.
